Filipino’s in Canada – the “show off” side
“Bato-bato sa langit ang tamaan huwag magagalit.”
WARNING: This article contains material not suitable for sensitive people especially Filipinos. If you are one of them please do not continue reading.
Have you ever wondered why Filipinos are a bunch of show offs? You see them everywhere at work, in your neighborhood even inside the malls where they thrive and mostly do their socializing. Have you ever wondered why Filipino’s here are a bunch of show offs? Owning or may I say having a finance-to-own vehicle be it a BMW, Mercedes or the likes and they can’t even afford to pay and mind you they are in a pool of financial crisis, it doesn’t even bother them since they can show it off to everyone. I just don’t get it why they do that I mean you’re in Canada, it’s a land where no one would go out of one’s way to look at the tag on your shirt if it says “GEORGE”. Why make it a fuss to buy a “PARASUCO” shirt that would rip you off of your $50.00 and you can’t even afford to pay the money you owe from whichever creditor. Bottom line is you carry the Filipino Culture – a very materialistic individual that feels happy when people notice them not of what they have acquired like those that money can’t buy but of a by-product of money itself.
What is disturbing is that Filipino’s here who can really afford anything are those who are frugal and yet they don’t show off anything they have. They live a simple life with their Nssan, Toyota, Honda and not the designer clothes that would costs so much but they will go all the trouble to enroll their kids on a $1200 drama class which I think is worth spending.
Material things do perish and even if you enjoy all those you will never get contented, you will never be able to live a life that is meaningful, and you will never see simplicity at its best.
JOKE:
Lucia: Nung June this year lang.
Maria: oh I see, buti naman may work ka agad dito.
Maria: matagal na 14 years old pa ako dito bale dito ako naghigh school na rin.
Lucia: talaga?

Being not necessarily show-off but waldas is more common with the Waray-waray culture, here in the Philippines.

It’s no different to any others countries where Filipino migrants live their idea of a “better life” by showboating their ‘wealth’ to attest that “they made it”. Same mentality applies overseas but twofold.
I havent been to any Filipino parties where you’ll overhear people talking about their measly lives. More often than not you’ll hear this kind of talk in a group of men ‘pare latest yang kotse ko mahal ang rims etc etc’. in a group of women its more on ‘pina renovate ko bahay namin, yung investments etc etc’
Pag nasasama ako sa kwento ng guys about their magandang cars, i’ll say ‘buti pa kayo, yung kotse ko yung pinapasabog sa old pinoy movies’ and usually that made them stop their payabangan contest. hehe
Anyway, not that I blame them. Prior to migrating overseas, im sure their life long dream is to be in another country with a big house, nice car and white picket fence like the ones they see in the movies.
Filipinos sa Pinas are naturally modest and humble pag walang pera lolz it just boggles me why majority throw them out of the window upon setting foot overseas. Parang ashamed of where they came from. We are not Filipinos we are Hispanics lolz
My best advise to newly arrive migrants from back home. ‘pre wag ka kagad mainggit sa nakikita mo. kaya mo rin yan.’ No need to keep up with the Jones ikanga i mean with the De La Cruz lolz

I really dont mind when people show off what they have…as long as they have something to brag about. What irks me most are people who tend to blatantly do it.
I would prefer not to speak in general…I’d rather speak for myself, my own experience and my way of handling “show offs”
Show off #1: My savings acct balance is over the roof!
Azalea: Wow that’s great! I guess you should consider resigning from your 2 other jobs!
Show off #2: My new friend in that elite neighborhood is the wife of the CEO of Chase Bank.
Azalea: I thought you just moved into that development 2 months ago. Isn’t that Chase Manhattan bank was acquired by J.P. Morgan in 1990? Hmmm, I probably wasn’t able to read the latest issue of the Conde Nast Portfolio..lols!
Show off#3: Why did u not get the Carlton model? It has 3500 sq. ft. of living space. Mine has 5000 sq. ft of living space including the basement. People would think that you are filthy rich because you own an estate like mansion.
Azalea: Mare, I am inviting you sa house warming ko. (only 3 months after my house was built) Ikaw, when can I see your mansion? You closed 18 months ago, right?
Show off #3: Soon Mare, you know I am going crazy running around looking for nice stuff sa bahay.
Azalea: Good for you Mare. Your Pare and I are too old to do our running exercise at home hehehe 2500 sq. ft of living space lang kase.
Pinoys tend to show off everything….money, friends they associate with, houses, cars and etc..etc.. It is somehow a way of self gratification to believe that you have alleviated yourself more than others. Regardless of who they really are…what they really have..and what roots they came from…I really don’t care. As long as they dont show off right on my face I allow them to be what they want to be….hey, afterall…DREAMS are FREE!!!

speaking of two jobs, why the hell would you have 2 jobs? sagot po eh kasi di magkasya kita sa isang trabaho. for some reasons i wouldn’t do two jobs when it’s already tiring to do one full-time 37.5 hours a week unless if you want to kill yourself from stress or if you’re greedy enough haha!

Fridays are so much fun when you’ve got “friends” I hurried from work l ast Friday, went home and cooked my famous “chicken curry” and then went downtown to meet with one of my “friends” – I used friends in quotation because it sounds more appalling not to mention a lot of them have already used me up in a timely manner again enough said and I shall go on with my lingering Friday madness.
